Gypsum contains sulphur as sulphate, the form taken up by plant roots. The sulphur in gypsum is readily available, so gypsum can be used where a quick response to sulphur is required. Gypsum has little if any effect on soil pH. It cannot be used as a substitute for lime to correct soil acidity, to raise the pH.

However, gypsum has the potential to relieve aluminum (Al 3+) toxicity in acid soils and to supply calcium and sulfur (S) for plant nutrition. Some natural and synthetic sources of gypsum also contain other chemical compounds, such as calcium carbonate (agricultural lime), calcium oxide (burned lime), or calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime).

Bureau and Roederer (1960), report that 30 percent gypsum content in soils of Tunisia is toxic to plant growth. Van Alphen and de los Rios Romero (1971) state, from field observations in the Ebro Valley of Spain, that plant growth is reduced where the gypsum content exceeds 20 to 25 percent. Soil gypsum affects the mineral contents of plants.

It also is stronger in increasing the PH levels in soil, but lacks the magnesium mined lime has. For instance, if a soil test calls for 1 ton of lime to the acre, I can apply .8 of a ton of mill lime. It is also faster acting, sweetening the soil in 3 months instead of 6 months for mined lime, but lasts 4 years instead of 7 year like mined lime.
